All about Yo! MTV Raps

Yo! MTV Raps was a platform for rappers. It showcased a lot of rappers from rappers that have been raping for many years to new and upcoming rappers. MTV Raps was a program that was two-hours long. This show was aired in the mid-80s, which was about the same time MTV just released their first Rap music video from the rap group Run DMC. Many of us know about this show and are big fans of it still today.

Who created Yo! MTV Raps?

While Yo! MTV Raps was first released in Europe from 1987 to the mid-90s and in the USA from August 1988 to August 1995.  Its rap videos and interviews with rap stars create a mix of performances and comedy in the studio, which the audience liked much.

Two great people created this fun program. They are Ted Demme who was the director and creator of the show and Peter Daugherty the co-creator. They both also worked in the promotion department of the network. Peter Daugherty was famous for joining the emerging music scene.  Ted Demme also directed a number of other films like The Ref, Life, Blow.

Doctor Dre’s real name is Andre Romelle Young. But he is professionally known as Doctor Dre. He was born on 18 February 1965, in California. Doctor Dre was known for more than just being the host of Yo MTV Raps. He was also a well established record producer, record executive, rapper, entrepreneur, and audio engineer. He is the former CEO of entertainment, the producer, and co-owner of the electronics the Beats. Doctor Dre was a part of  Death Row Records too. Starting off as a rapper and later putting his business hat on and becoming a true entrepreneur.


 Yo! MTV RAPs was a great show that aired in the 80s. It was a great place where many hip-hop stars began their career. the show ran for many seasons after running a long time the show stopped airing in the late 90s. For most rappers yo MTV Raps was not only just a show but it was the start of a family where rappers can communicate to their fans better on a clear platform.
